NPU expert Prof. Jan Cornelis, from Free University of Brussels, Belgium, received the Chinese Government Friendship Award, which is the highest honor that the Chinese government confers to foreign experts who have made remarkable contributions to China’s economic and social progress. On September 30, Prof. Jan Cornelis was invited to meet Li Keqiang, Chinese Premier of State Council at Great hall of the People. During the meeting, Premier Li expressed his sincere congratulation and gratitude to Friendship Award winners for their great contributions to China’s economic and social development.
Prof. Jan Cornelis, a world-known expert in informatics, is working as the Vice-Rector of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium. In 1992, Prof. Jan Cornelis paid the first visit to NPU, starting the cooperation with the university since then. In 1998, he was appointed as the NPU visiting professor and received the Shaanxi governmental “Sanqin Friendship Award” in 2012. Owing to his proposal and contributing efforts, a number of noted initiatives were realized, such as joint research and teaching programmes and the signing of a so-called PIP, a Privileged Partnership of the VUB with the NPU. The PIP was signed on 31 March, 2014 during a ceremony in the Brussels Egmont Palace in the presence of the Chinese President, Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo . In Sept. 2014, Prof. Jan Cornelis won the government Friendship Award for his pioneering role for the cooperation.
