Grade

Grade 1

Objects

Foreigners without Chinese learning experience

Credit hours

16 weeks in a semester with at least 20 hours per week

Courses

Listening and speaking, Comprehensive Chinese

Content

To learn the basic sound, rhyme, tone, “er” rule and tone sandhi in Mandarin; to master about 1000 Chinese characters and 100 grammar items; to listen to words, phrases, sentences and short dialogues; to utter complete sentences and simple conversation; to read essays of about 100 to 200 words; to practice the basic Chinese writing, sentence dictation and sentence making.

Purposes

To enhance students’ sense in Chinese sound, rhyme and tone and their ability of understanding the teacher’s slow explanation in class, to help students establish a system of guessing the meaning of new words, to guide them to pronounce words, phrases and sentences correctly so as to be involved in daily communication smoothly, to improve their ability of recognizing Chinese pinyin easily, summarizing an essay on the basis of 80% of known words with dictionaries and to assist students to write down the pinyin of what they hear and to write Chinese in a correct way with a fundamental structure of Chinese writing knowledge.

Grade 2

Objects

Learners who have completed Grade 1 courses and obtained the equivalent eligibility

16 weeks in a semester with at least 20 hours per week

Courses

Listening and speaking, Comprehensive Chinese

Content

To train in sentence stress, pause and intonation change; to learn about 1300 new words based on Grade 1, to master 80 grammar items and basic grammatical structures; to listen to situational dialogues of less than 400 words to practice oral conversation and short sentences, to speak out longer sentences in conversational situation more fluently, to read articles of 200 to 600 words, to comprehend the main idea of passages of around 5% of new words and to practice writing short notes, letters, application compositions and narratives.

Purposes

To enables students to understand simple conversations in daily life, to understand others’ description of a certain case, to communicate in daily life such as inquiries, shopping and other basic oral communications, to express their intentions or describe a case with simple words they have learned; to understand the main idea of an essay with 90% of its words learned, to improve reading speed to 90-100 words / minutes, to write notes or short letters and other practical compositions and narration of 400 words .

Grade 3

Objects

Learners who have completed Grade 2 courses and obtained the equivalent eligibility

Credit hours

16 weeks in a semester with at least 20 hours per week

Courses

Listening and speaking, Comprehensive Chinese, Reading

Content

To improve pronunciation especially pay attention to the tone and intonation, to learn about 1400 words and about 40 grammar items, to pay attention to the analysis of Chinese semantic, usages and discourse structure, to increase the amount of reading, to strengthen general listening and speaking, to train the ability of paragraph expression and note taking and to carry out practical writing practice.

Purposes

To enable students to understand daily and social or business conversations of 180-220 words/minute that consist of standard Mandarin or with slight dialect, to have the ability of paragraph expression basically with correct intonation, appropriate speed and clear delivery, to read a certain range of application compositions, to have the overall ability of listening to longer paragraphs with the speed not less than 10 words/minute and to be able to interpret between Chinese and mother languages on familiar topics.

Grade 4

Objects

Learners who have completed Grade 3 courses and obtained the equivalent eligibility

Credit hours

16 weeks in a semester with at least 20 hours per week

Courses

Listening and speaking, Comprehensive Chinese, Writing

Content

To learn about 1400 words and their corresponding Chinese characters and about 40 grammar items, to strengthen the ability of analyzing semantic, usages and discourse structure, to improve the ability of listening to and reading longer pieces of news and writing on a specified topic and to carry out themed discussions to improve the ability of expression.

Purposes

To enable students to understand basic college courses and lectures in a certain department and news broadcasting on familiar topics, to discuss on a certain topic and read newspapers and course books in a certain department by overcoming obstacles, getting the main idea, searching for information and absorbing new words, to write articles in certain business topics and general application compositions with correct format, clear expression and accuracy and to translate general articles and application compositions whose language is basically not difficult.

Grade 5

Objects

Learners who have completed Grade 4 courses and obtained the equivalent eligibility

Credit hours

16 weeks in a semester with at least 20 hours per week

Courses

Listening and speaking, Comprehensive Chinese, Reading, Writing and Chinese Culture

Content

To learn a variety of articles of different themes, genres, styles of about 1400 words which reflect the contemporary Chinese social life and cultural characteristics and about 50 grammar items, to train intensive reading, listening and skip reading, to cultivate the ability of getting main ideas and the implied meaning in reading or conversation, to express accurately and properly and to learn about Chinese culture and related knowledge of pragmatics.

Purposes

To enable students to understand Mandarin conversation, broadcasting and TV program at a slightly higher speed with relatively more complex context, to systematically and completely express their thoughts and feelings, to express with a longer paragraph, to read texts whose content and language structure are slightly difficult, to understand the meaning hidden behind the text, to understand longer Chinese paragraphs when listening, to write general articles and documents and to write an essay of more than 800 words on a specified topic within two hours.
